Mark Frontczak is a career cartoonist, editorial artist, and theologian who has spent four decades using humor to communicate the truth of God's Word. He is the creator of Sparrow Cartoons — single-panel, scripture-grounded, edifying Christian humor — and the co-founder of Glad Magazine, one of the early Christian humor publications of the 1980s.
Mark holds an Associate Degree of Theology from The Way College of Biblical Research in Rome City, Indiana, and spent 24 years in active ministry before returning to cartooning. His work is non-partisan, non-confrontational, and designed to be appropriate for all mainstream Christian denominations.
From Editorial Cartoonist to Christian Cartoonist
Mark Frontczak's story with cartooning began the way most callings do — with a passion he couldn't quite explain. As a young man in his twenties, he found he could say something with a cartoon that words alone couldn't quite reach. He began producing editorial cartoons for newspapers, where he learned that a powerful image doesn't always need to be funny — it just needs to be true.
During those same years, Mark was deepening his understanding of God's Word through The Way College of Biblical Research in Rome City, Indiana, where he earned an Associate Degree of Theology. Faith and art were, for him, never separate things.
Glad Magazine and the Birth of Christian Cartoon Humor
In the early 1980s, Mark joined with other cartoonists to co-found Glad Magazine — one of the first publications dedicated to Christian humor cartooning in America. Working alongside other artists at Glad, he began exploring a question that would define the rest of his creative life: how can cartoons and humor communicate ideas from God's Word in a way that reaches people where they are?
He found it more rewarding than anything he had done before.
Twenty-Four Years in Ministry
From 1986 to 2010, Mark set aside his drawing pen to devote himself fully to the ministry of the gospel of Jesus Christ and to his family. These years were not lost years — they were the years that gave his cartoons the depth they carry today. When he returned to cartooning, he brought with him a pastor's heart, a theologian's discipline, and the humility of someone who has spent decades in the Word.
The Return — Sparrow Cartoons
When Mark began to pray about whether to cartoon again, he looked at what was being produced in Christian humor and saw a need — for cartoons that could speak to God's people with the truth of His Word, not just make them chuckle. Sparrow Cartoons is his answer to that need.
His desire is simple: to provoke thought, build up and encourage the body of Christ, and — perhaps — evoke a laugh now and then.
What Mark Believes About Humor and Faith
Humor, for Mark, is not decoration on top of faith. It is a vehicle for truth. A single cartoon can lower a person's defenses, open their imagination, and invite them to see something they had been too guarded to look at directly. He believes this is part of why God gave us the capacity for laughter in the first place.
